OCRA Ireland Coaching Programme
Overview
The OCRA Ireland Coaching Programme is the national coaching pathway for obstacle sports in Ireland. It provides a structured route for the education, development, and recognition of coaches working across participation, performance, and high-performance environments.
The programme supports the safe and progressive development of athletes and participants in obstacle sports, while creating a clear pathway for coaches from entry level through to advanced coach educator status. It is aligned to the published World Obstacle / FISO Coach Development Programme, which sets out a seven-level coaching pathway, baseline certification prerequisites, progression expectations, and continuing education requirements.
Programme Objectives
The OCRA Ireland Coaching Programme:
- promotes safe, ethical, and athlete-centred coaching practice,
- supports participation growth across OCR and related obstacle disciplines,
- provides a structured pathway from grassroots coaching to international performance coaching,
- develops coaches through education, practice, reflection, and continuing professional development,
- strengthens the quality and consistency of coaching across obstacle sports in Ireland.
Obstacle sports coaching requires more than obstacle knowledge alone. Coaches must understand safeguarding, health and safety, inclusion, athlete development, physical preparation, communication, and ethical practice. World Obstacle’s published framework also makes clear that its coaching courses are intended for coaches who already have proficiency in teaching and training athletes.
Pathway Structure
The OCRA Ireland Coaching Programme consists of seven certification levels:
- OCR Coach - Foundations
- OCR Coach - Participation
- OCR Coach - Performance
- OCR Coach - National
- OCR Coach - International
- OCR Coach - Senior International
- OCR Coach - Master Coach Trainer
This structure reflects the seven-level World Obstacle pathway, which publicly identifies the route from certification prerequisites through to Master Coach Trainer.
Progression and Maintenance
Progression through the pathway is based on course completion, assessment, practical application, and coaching experience. In the World Obstacle framework, 100 hours of coaching practice are required to progress to the next level, and coaches must complete continuing education plus at least 100 hours of coaching every two years to maintain certification. OCRA Ireland applies these principles within its own certification, renewal, and recognition processes.
Core Principles
All OCRA Ireland coaching certifications are built on the following principles:
- athlete welfare and safeguarding,
- inclusion and accessibility,
- safe coaching environments,
- ethical and professional conduct,
- progressive athlete development,
- evidence-informed coaching practice,
- commitment to lifelong learning.
