Qualifying for International Competition
The Obstacle Course Racing Association of Ireland (OCRA ÉIREANN) manages Irish qualification pathways where qualification or National Federation approval is required for international obstacle sport competition.
Qualification requirements vary between championships.
There is no single qualification rule that automatically applies to every international event, discipline or category.
When Qualification is Required
Some international championships require athletes to qualify through an approved national pathway before they can compete.
Where this applies, OCRA will publish the qualification criteria for Irish athletes.
This information may include:
- Approved qualification events
- Disciplines
- Categories
- Age Groups
- Qualification positions or standards
- Qualification period
- Number of available places
- Registration deadlines
- Additional selection requirements
Current Irish Qualification Route
Where qualification is required, OCRA-organised qualification events currently form the recognised Irish qualification pathway.
Competing in an independent OCR event does not automatically qualify an athlete for international competition.
OCRA is open to expanding the qualification calendar by working with established Irish race organisers.
Race organisers may apply to have suitable events considered for:
- OCRA sanctioning
- Qualification Event status
- Irish National Championship status
Where an event has been formally approved as a Qualification Event, this will be clearly communicated before the relevant competition.
Open Registration
Some international competitions do not require Irish athletes to complete a qualification event.
This may apply to an entire championship or only to particular categories or disciplines.
Where direct registration is permitted, athletes can enter according to the rules established by the relevant championship organiser.
OCRA will clearly identify these opportunities where possible.
Athletes may still need to meet requirements relating to:
- Nationality
- Age
- Category
- Registration deadlines
- Membership or federation requirements
- Other championship eligibility criteria
Qualification and Selection
Qualifying for a championship does not always automatically guarantee selection.
Where the number of eligible Irish athletes exceeds the number of available places, a further selection process may be necessary.
Any additional selection criteria should be published as part of the relevant championship information.
Qualification Events
Approved Qualification Events will be clearly identified within the OCRA Events Calendar.
The qualification information for each event should explain:
- Which championship the event qualifies athletes for
- Which disciplines are included
- Which categories are eligible
- How qualification is determined
- How many athletes or positions qualify
- What happens after qualification
Age Groups and Categories
International competition structures can change between championships.
Age Groups, categories and age calculation methods may therefore differ between events.
Athletes should always use the category information published for the championship they intend to enter.
After You Qualify
Once an athlete has qualified, OCRA will provide or publish information explaining the next steps.
This may include:
- Confirmation of qualification
- Registration instructions
- Registration deadline
- Team Ireland requirements
- Athlete information requirements
- Championship fees where applicable
- Competition information
Athletes are responsible for completing any required registration and providing requested information within the applicable deadlines.
Previous Qualification Results
Historic qualification lists and previous qualification criteria may remain available within the OCRA archive.
These are retained as part of the historical record and must not be used as the basis for current qualification unless specifically stated.
